Upon reading the document, Equiano clearly portrays the differences in slave treatment presented by the African and European owners. As seen by the excerpt, the whites often practiced extreme brutality and masculinity, treating the slaves with no mercy and providing them with harsh environments and circumstances. He mentions that the whites would implant these dark ideologies in his mind due to the excessive violence and savagery he was exposed to, ” I was immediately handled and tossed up to see if I were found by some of the crew; and I was now persuaded that I had gotten into a world of bad spirits, and that they were going to kill me. ” (p.5). Similarly, he describes the experience of treatment arriving on the shipment boat, as it was pure barbarity and dying on a ship did not matter to them at all, “some of my countrymen, being pressed by hunger, took an opportunity when they thought no one saw them, of trying to get a little privately; but they were discovered, and the attempt procured them some very severe floggings.”(p.6).
On the other hand, however, he describes the treatment be received from the Africans as a very pleasant experience. He was often washed and perfumed and his hygiene was essential, they would provide him with meals and food and even offer him to eat with the family (p.4). This evidently shows the massive gaps between the scales of how Europeans treated their slaves in comparison to the Africans
